Hawthorne Smiles Dental is a comprehensive family dental practice that cares for patients of all ages — including young children!
We are passionate about creating safe, fun and positive experiences and habits for kids who visit our pediatric dentist!
A good age to bring your child in is around two years of age. At this age, most of their baby teeth will have come through into their oral cavity.
Parents can set a great foundation for their kids by:
We believe that most dental problems are preventable. That’s why Hawthorn Smiles Dental focuses on prevention-based and minimally-invasive strategies for kids. Keeping your child out of pain, promoting healthy tooth development, and treating problems early gives your son or daughter a head start on having a great smile as an adult.
Some of the paediatric dentistry treatments we offer include:
Exams and Cleanings — Kids need regular checkups too! Primary (baby) teeth can develop cavities very quickly, because they’re weaker than adult teeth. Plan to schedule a checkup for each member of your family at least every six months.
Fissure Sealants — Protective pit and fissure sealants keep cavity-causing bacteria out of hard to clean areas, like the deep grooves on back teeth. We recommend sealing adult molars shortly after they erupt, which is usually around the ages of 6 and 12, respectively. They only take a few minutes to apply, and no drilling is needed!
Fluoride Treatment — We’ll apply a fluoride treatment to your child’s teeth after their cleaning, to strengthen and remineralise their tooth enamel. Regular applications help reduce their risk of decay and can reverse early stages of tooth decay.
Oral Hygiene Education — Age appropriate brushing and flossing tips help your child develop healthy lifelong habits.
Orthodontic Screenings — By age 7, each child will have an orthodontic evaluation to screen for potential problems related to their jaw development and adult tooth eruption patterns.
Composite Fillings — White fillings are minimally invasive and free of mercury. They allow us to use the smallest restoration possible when treating your child’s cavities.
Pulpotomies and Crowns — Severe tooth decay and abscesses can cause premature tooth loss and permanent changes in your child’s biting patterns. Instead, a therapeutic dental crown and pulpotomy can help retain the tooth for as long as nature intended.
Early preventative dental care is a great way to help kids feel at ease in the dentist’s office. Our family-friendly team works at your child’s pace to provide gentle, fun care that helps them experience oral health services in a positive light.
If your child is in pain or requires restorative treatment, we also offer happy gas (nitrous oxide sedation) to help them relax. This gentle sedative is fast-acting, safe, and quickly reversible. In many cases, it’s the key to helping nervous children get the essential services that their smile needs.
Does your family qualify for Medicaid? The Child Dental Benefits Scheme (CDBS) covers up to $1000 in dental care per child, over the course of two years. That way if your child needs attention, we can provide the necessary treatment straightaway.
